Venting

General Description

In this operation, a vessel that is initially under pressure is vented to the atmosphere (i.e., a certain amount of freeboard gas leaves the vessel) until its final pressure becomes equal to the ambient pressure. If the final pressure must be less than ambient, please use an Evacuation operation, instead.

This operation may result in VOC emissions if volatile compounds are present in the vessel; for more details, see Chapter 10  (Emissions).

Venting: Modeling Calculations

The user specifies the final system pressure and the duration of this operation. The specified final pressure must be less than the initial pressure and higher than or equal to the ambient pressure.

Note that the ambient pressure can be specified through the Reference Conditions dialog. To display this dialog, right-click on white space in the flowsheet and then select Reference Conditions... from the context menu that is displayed.

This operation affects the amount of gases in the freeboard space. The material balance calculations are done by assuming ideal gas behavior.
