This operation is similar to Cake Wash. The filtration cake (“retentate”) is washed to remove impurities remaining in the interstitial space of the cake. The amount and type of washing determines the displacement of solvent and soluble components in the cake with the wash solvent. For displacement washing type, it is assumed that the solvent and soluble components in the cake are displaced in an embolic (plug-flow) fashion. For slurry washing type, it is assumed that the washing solvent is mixed with the cake and then the cake is filtered to its original dryness.
