Variable Definitions, Ranges and Default Values

The following table shows a brief description of the variables appearing in this tab. The table also displays their default values and their generally acceptable range:

Variable

Default Value

Range

Key Component (for Loading Capacity Specification)
Indicates the reference component used to set a resin loading capacity. Click on the list box to bring up a list of registered components in order to select a valid component of the feed stream. Used only if the loading capacity specification option is selected.

<None>

Any Comp.

Capacity Per Volume (kg/L)
If the resin’s loading capacity is set, then this value corresponds to the resin’s loading capacity for a selected key component (the maximum inlet mass of a key component that can be processed by the resin per resin volume).
If the resin’s binding capacity is set, then this value corresponds to the resin’s total binding capacity (the maximum mass that can bind to the resin per resin volume).

10.0

Positive

 Capacity Utilization (%)
The percentage of the resin’s capacity that is utilized by this operation.

100.0

0 - 100

Loading Time (min)
The actual duration of the operation (per cycle).

30.0

Positive

Linear Velocity (cm/h)
The linear velocity of the feed in the resin.

300.0

Positive

Absolute Flowrate (L/h)
The volumetric flowrate of the feed in the resin.

0.0

Positive

Relative Flowrate (BV/min)
The volumetric flowrate of the feed in the resin expressed as number of bed volumes per time unit.

0.0

Positive

Absolute Loading Volume (per Cycle, per Unit) (L)
The loading volume per cycle and per equipment unit.

0.0

Positive

Relative Loading Volume (per Cycle, per Unit) (BV)
The loading volume per cycle and per equipment unit, expressed as number of bed volumes.

0.0

Positive

Retained %
The percentage of inlet mass that is retained in the resin for each component.

0.0

0 – 100

 Retained Amt (kg)
The retained mass in the resin for each component.

0.0

Positive

Ignore in Sizing?
This option is shown next to each component only if the ‘Set Total Binding Capacity’ option is selected. Check the box next to a component to ignore the corresponding retained % in equipment sizing calculations.

Consider Throwaway ?
Check this box to consider throwing-away a fraction of flow-through and show the “Throwaway” tab in which you can specify component throwaway data.

Specification Choices / Comments

The following list describes the available specification choices in this tab; for more details on how these are implemented, see PBA Flow-Through: Modeling Calculations.

If the ‘Set Loading Capacity of <Component>’ option is selected...

You must select a key component and specify the resin’s loading capacity with respect to that component per resin (bed) volume.

If the ‘Set Total Binding Capacity’ option is set...

You must specify the resin’s total binding capacity per resin (bed) volume. Optionally, you may ignore a component from equipment sizing calculations by checking the ‘Ignore in Sizing?’ box next to that component.

Loading Time Options...

The loading time can be either set by the user or calculated by the program based on the loading flowrate.

Loading Flowrate Options...

If the loading time is calculated, you can choose among three different options for specifying the loading flowrate: you can specify the feed’s linear velocity, or its volumetric flowrate, or its relative flowrate (in bed volumes) in the bed. Any variable that is not specified will be calculated by the program.

‘Consider Throwaway’ option...

If this option is checked, the Throwaway tab will be shown (see PBA Flow-Through: Throwaway Tab) and the Component Throwaway Data specified in this tab will be considered in the calculations. If this option is not checked, then no throwaway will be considered in the calculations.
