Variable Definitions, Ranges and Default Values

The following table shows a brief description of the variables appearing in this tab. The table also displays their default values and their generally acceptable range. Note that due to how the variables are used in the modeling equations, the range of acceptable values may be further reduced; for more details, see INX Column Loading: Modeling Assumptions & Constraints.

Variable

Default Value

Range

Breakthrough Time (h)
The actual duration of the loading operation (per cycle).

200.0

Positive

Empty Bed Contact Time (min)
The amount of time it takes for a feed volume of material to flow through an empty bed.

50.0

Positive

Resin Binding Capacity based on CaCO3 (g/L)
The maximum ion mass that can bind to the resin volume expressed as equivalent CaCO3 hardness.

50.0

Positive

Resin Binding Capacity based on Ion Mass (g/L)
The maximum ion mass that can bind to the resin volume.

20.0

Positive

Resin Ion Exchange Capacity (eq/L)
The maximum amount of ions that can bind to the resin volume, expressed as equivalents per unit volume.

1.8

Positive

Service Volume
The volume of material that can be fed to the column until breakthrough is reached, expressed as number of bed volumes.

400.0

Positive

Cycles Per Week
The number of procedure cycles per week.

0.0

Positive

Binding %
The amount of ion mass that binds to the resin for each component, expressed as percentage of the component’s mass in the feed stream.

0-8

Ignore In Sizing ?
Check the box next to a component to ignore the binding percentage of that component in equipment sizing calculations.

Yes/No

Symbol Key: User-specified value (always input); Calculated value (always output); Sometimes input, sometimes output

Specification Choices / Comments

The following list describes the available specification choices in this tab; for more details on how these are implemented, see Discrete Pass-Through (in a GBX): Modeling Calculations.

Breakthrough Time...

The Breakthrough Time can be either set by the user or calculated based on Empty-Bed Contact Time.

Model Options...

You may either set the resin’s binding or ion exchange capacity or the service volume. In either case, you must also set for each component the binding % and whether that component is ‘Ignored in Sizing’.

Additionally, If the ‘Resin Capacity’ option is selected, you may either set a binding capacity or an ion exchange capacity. If ‘Binding Capacity’ is chosen, you may either set the binding capacity expressed in terms of CaCO3 equivalent mass or the binding capacity expressed in terms of ion mass. If ‘Ion Exchange Capacity’ is selected, you may specify the ion exchange capacity expressed in terms of equivalents per unit volume.
