Variable Definitions, Ranges and Default Values

The following table shows a brief description of the variables appearing in this tab. The table also displays their default values and their generally acceptable range:

Variable

Default Value

Range

Relative Eluant Volume (per Cycle, per Unit) (BV)
The volume of the eluant per cycle and per equipment unit, expressed as number of bed volumes (BV).

4.0

Positive

Absolute Eluant Volume (per Cycle, per Unit) (L)
The volume of the eluant per cycle and per equipment unit.

0.0

Positive

Elution Time (min)
The actual duration of the operation (per cycle).

30.0

Positive

Linear Velocity (cm/h)
The linear velocity of the eluant in the bed.

300.0

Positive

Absolute Flowrate (L/h)
The volumetric flowrate of the eluant in the bed.

0.0

Positive

Relative Flowrate (BV/min)
The volumetric flowrate of the eluant in the bed expressed as number of bed volumes (BV) per time unit.

0.0

Positive

Eluant Volume in Collection Stream (BV)
The volume of the eluant in the product stream expressed as number of bed volumes (BV).

2.0

Positive

Collection Stream
Indicates the output port that is connected to the collection stream. Click on the list box to bring up a list of available output ports in order to select one.

Out #1

Any Output Port

Waste Stream
Indicates the output port that is connected to the waste stream. Click on the list box to bring up a list of available output ports in order to select one.

Out #8

Any Output Port

 Retained Amt Before (kg)
The retained mass in the bed for each component at the start of this operation.

0.0

Positive

Release %
The percentage of retained mass that is removed from the bed for each component.

0.0

0 – 100

 Retained Amt After (kg)
The retained mass in the bed for each component at the end of this operation.

0.0

Symbol Key: User-specified value (always input); Calculated value (always output); Sometimes input, sometimes output

Specification Choices / Comments

The following list describes the available specification choices in this tab; for more details on how these are implemented, see Column Elution: Modeling Calculations.

Eluant Volume Options...

You can either specify the eluant’s absolute or relative volume (per batch cycle and per equipment unit). Any variable that is not specified will be calculated by the program.

Elution Time Options...

The elution time can be either set by the user or calculated by the program based on the eluant flowrate.

Eluant Flowrate Options...

If the elution time is calculated, you can choose among three different options for specifying the eluant flowrate: you can specify the eluant’s linear velocity, or its volumetric flowrate, or its relative flowrate (in bed volumes) in the bed. Any variable that is not specified will be calculated by the program.
